zach dawson is an experienced composer and researcher. In his current practice-based research he proposes that the materiality of music now extends beyond the confines of its realisation through sound. Exploring the idea of ‘composing through media’, he conceptualises and constructs music through non-sonic media. In doing so, his practice sits at the intersection of conceptual, electronic music and contemporary art practice as he experiments with media and formats outside of music.

His output spans a number of disciplines. He has developed an event score anthology, an intermedial website, video and sound installations, online performance-installations, and live performance experimental electronic music under the duo 7balcony. As well as self-producing and releasing his own work, he has worked collaboratively with visual artists on large scale exhibitions featuring his sound works at Aslyum Gallery (2020), Wolverhampton Art Gallery (2021), Eastside Projects (2023), and Kunsthal Gent (2024). He recently worked at the Orpheus Institute (Belgium, 2023–2024) as a visiting researcher and his music and research has been presented at the University of Chicago (2023), BEAST (Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre) FEaST (2022, 2021), the University of Birmingham (2021) and NIME (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) (2021).

zach dawson recently completed his AHRC Midlands4Cities funded PhD at the University of Birmingham where he is currently a Teaching Fellow for the Academic Writing Advisory Service in the College of Arts and Law. In 2016 he co-founded Post-Paradise Series, where as co-curator and project manager he produced experimental music concerts supporting over 70 artists, funded by Arts Council England, RVW Trust and Hinrichsen Foundation.
